Hi Friends,
This month I want to talk to about vision. Helen Keller is quoted as having said, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.” Sight is the ability to see what can be seen. Vision is the ability to see what cannot be seen.
Do you have a vision for your life? I want to encourage you to get one.
A vision is like a roadmap that shows the end destination and/or some mile markers along the way. Your vision will likely have varying levels of detail in different seasons. You may have one instruction regarding the very next step you are to take, and nothing more. God told Abraham to get up and go to a place that He would show him. Abraham didn’t know where he was going, he just had an instruction to leave the current place.
In another season, you may have the end destination, but not the specifics on how to get there. For example, David knew early on that he would be the King of Israel. But he didn’t know when or how God would fulfill that vision.
Proverbs 29:18 says “Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained.”
In this verse, the word “vision” is interpreted a few different ways across translations, including revelation, divine guidance, and prophetic vision. They all underscore that vision is God-given. It comes from God and is ultimately fulfilled by God, but must be pursued by you and I. Vision guides us, informs our decisions, and factors into what we choose to do and not to do.
“Unrestrained” is also interpreted a few different ways across translations- perish, run wild, without order, made naked. The point here is that when vision is absent, people are not really living, they are reduced to less than they should be, they are exposed and unprotected. The abundance, fulfillment, peace, and joy that God promises, only exist within God’s vision for your life.
So how do you get a vision for your life? I would offer this formula:
Ask God + Agree with God + Align with God.
Ask God to give you His vision for your life. That is the only one that matters. Be willing to let go of how you thought your life would end up and embrace God’s vision.
Agreeing with God accelerates the vision. Vision is about what you see. But when you start to believe and agree with what you see, no matter how big, intimidating, or surprising it may be, that is when the divine momentum kicks in and you find your stride.
This was a difficult one for me. Here’s why. I had matured to the place of obedience, where even if I didn’t want to do something God was asking me to do, I would do it because I knew how much God valued obedience. And sometime my obedience was/is delayed, because I am still a work in progress. But I remember God telling me one evening, “Brandi I require your obedience, but I desire your agreement.” I realized in that moment that there were some things that I had heard God say about me, about who I was, and who I would be, that I had not allowed to penetrate my heart.
It was like the classic movie scene, when a romance has built up, and the guys says to the girl, “I love you.”, and rather than say it back, the girl responds “thank you”. What a let down!
Similarly, God was saying to me, “My plans for you are beautiful and better than you could ever imagine.” And I was saying to Him, “Oh, that’s nice”. But His desired response was, “I love beautiful plans and I can see myself fulfilling every one of them because I know You will be with me every step of the way. I am nervous, but where I am weak you are strong. You will empower me to do things that surprise even me.”
I had to rewrite the scene. Which meant I had to let go of who I had gotten comfortable being, my preferences, and my dislikes. I had to let go of who I thought I was and allow God to introduce me to the me He had called me to be. And most importantly, I had to change my response and agree with God.
Align with God by getting on the path He’s prepared for you and walking out his plan. This includes your actions, but it doesn’t stop there. It also includes your motives, attitudes, appetite, patterns, and pursuits.
Friends, your life is too valuable to live without a vision. I can assure you that your Creator is waiting to generously give you the wisdom you need to understand His divine vision for your life, and to partner with you to fulfill it. All you have to do is ask Him, agree with Him, and align with Him.
This is going to be a great series. I have so much to share on this topic. I’ll be back with another blog next week, but in the mean time, you can catch me posting on my Instagram page.
